We're committed to making smarter, greener choices to protect our planet and reduce our environmental impact whenever possible. Learn about the steps we're taking towards sustainability!
At Aurora Custom Concrete, we are committed to making smarter, greener choices to protect our planet for future generations. Concrete is the backbone of modern construction, and it’s the second most-used material globally (surpassed only by water). However, its production accounts for approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions.
While we understand that we can’t transform the industry alone, we believe that every step toward sustainability matters. That’s why we are dedicated to adopting materials and practices that reduce our environmental impact whenever possible.
How We Are Helping
1. FRP Rebar: A Stronger, Greener Alternative
Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to steel, making it a cleaner, greener option for flatwork projects.
4.4x stronger than #4 steel rebar and 2.3x lighter, reducing deadweight, transportation costs, and emissions.
Corrosion-resistant, unlike steel, making it ideal for coastal, humid, and chemically aggressive environments.
Thermal expansion coefficient closer to concrete, reducing the risk of cracking and structural damage due to sudden temperature fluctuations.
2. Type 1L Cement: Lowering CO₂ Emissions
Type 1L cement, also known as portland-limestone cement (PLC), is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete by replacing a portion of clinker (the most CO₂-intensive ingredient) with finely ground limestone.
Reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 10% by requiring less heat and fossil fuel in production.
Performs similarly to traditional Portland cement, making it a sustainable and seamless alternative.
Many concrete plants have already switched to Type 1L as their primary cement, accelerating the industry’s shift to lower-carbon construction.
3. Liquid Release: A Cleaner, Safer Choice
Liquid release agent is a more environmentally conscious alternative to powder release, offering multiple benefits:
No airborne dust clouds, making it safer for workers and the surrounding environment.
Less extensive washing required, saving water and reducing contaminated runoff.
Faster cleanup and less waste, lowering material consumption and overall environmental impact.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that evaporate into the air, releasing toxic fumes and strong chemical odors that contribute to smog and poor air quality.
High-VOC products can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory issues.
Aurora Custom Concrete only uses low-VOC products, significantly reducing harmful emissions and promoting cleaner air for workers and clients alike.
All products used are under 350 g/L VOC
5. Recycling & Locally Sourced Materials
Whenever possible, we prioritize recycling and sourcing materials locally to minimize waste and transportation emissions.
Leftover concrete is crushed and recycled into aggregate or repurposed as clean fill for land development.
Lumber cuts are saved and reused for forming reinforcements such as kickers and cleats.
A reclaimed wooden deck from one of our projects was repurposed into a chicken coop, fencing, and trailer sides instead of being sent to a landfill.
6. Green Research & Development (R&D)
Through ongoing research and development, we continuously explore eco-friendly materials, low-carbon alternatives, and innovative methods that reduce our environmental impact without compromising strength or beauty.
Geopolymer concrete and carbon-sequestering additives are being evaluated for future projects.
Low-VOC sealers and sustainable reinforcement options help us stay ahead of the curve.
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and inspiring others to take steps toward a more sustainable future—one project at a time.
At Aurora Custom Concrete, we believe that sustainability and quality craftsmanship go hand in hand. By integrating smarter materials, responsible sourcing, and green technologies, we are leading the charge in making decorative concrete more environmentally responsible. If you're looking for a sustainable approach to concrete, we’d love to help. Let’s build a better, greener future together. 🌎💚#SustainableConcrete #EcoFriendlyBuilding #GreenConstruction #AuroraCustomConcrete
